Introduction of Optical fiber

Introduction of Optical fiber:

An optical fiber is a flexible, and transparent natural fiber which is produced by using plastic or silica (drawing glass) whose diameter is kept slightly greater than the diameter of a human hair. One of the most widely used applications of optical fiber is the transmission of light between two ends of the fiber and it has a wide range of applications in fiber-optic communications, where they are used to transmit light over long distances and at high bandwidths (rates of data transfer) in comparison to that of electrical cables. The use of optical fiber is more favorable overuse of metal wires because of the fact that signals travel along with them with less loss. In addition to that, fiber optics also have immunity against electromagnetic interference which is a problem from which metal sires suffer a lot.

Fibers are also used for the purpose of imaging and illuminating and they are often wrapped in bundles so that they can be used in the case of a fiberscope or to light images from confined spaces. There are some specially designed fibers that are for a wide range of applications, some of them include fiber lasers and fiber optic sensors. Precision optics manufacturers are selected from the best optical lenses manufacturer to manufacture custom lens and prism products selection is done very precisely.

It’s structure

Optical fiber typically consists of a core at the center which is covered by a cladding material that is transparent in nature which has a refractive index less than the refractive index of the core. Light is made to pass through the core where the phenomenon of total internal reflection happens which makes the fiber work as a waveguide. Multi-mode fiber is one that contains which contain multiple propagation paths on the other hand the gibers which have a single mode of propagation are known as single-mode fibers (SMF).

The core diameter of multi-mode fiber is usually wider than the usual ones and is used for short-distance communication links and for applications where high power must be transmitted. Single-mode fibers are used in most cases where the length of links is longer than 1,000 meters (3,3000 ft).

It is highly important in fiber optic communication to join optical fibers with low loss. It is more complex than joining an electrical wire or cable and involves careful cleaning of the fibers, precise alignment of the fiber cores, and coupling of these aligned cores. In the applications which require a permanent connection, the fusion splice technique is used.
